GratiTuesday (on a Friday...) #11 & #12

Finding the positives in every day.

Life has been busy, busy, BUSY!!  Hopefully I'll get this back on a regular, every Tuesday schedule once Steel Magnolias is over - tomorrow already! Holy smokes!

April 21 - April 27

In response to some pretty crappy, body shaming comments from a British TV presenter, an amazing hashtag rose up. #WeAreTheThey has been amazing to follow and participate in. So many fab people of all shapes and sizes came out and said "I'm the 'THEY' you're talking about and, no, you won't make us 'feel uncomfortable'. And we look damn good." Also this week was my local TEDx event. It was another insanely inspiring day. I highly recommend you seek out any TEDx events near you. The Friday was the final home meeting of Avengers Club where we watched 2 of my favourite Marvel movies, Iron Man 3 & Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Also I discovered the app MyIdol, and life will never be the same.

April 28 - May 4

I got an amazing new profile picture, drawn by artist Matt Cummings, of my most anticipated upcoming comic Power Up! I also had a good chat on Twitter with a "geek clothing" retailer about maybe expanding their women's lines to include actual plus sized options. Initiated by them! I love a company willing & eager to listen! Also, AGE OF ULTRON came out this week! I celebrated with shawarma on Thursday before I saw it that evening, then saw it again the next day with some of the Avengers Club crew in IMAX. SO WORTH IT. And if that night wasn't Marvely enough, when I got home my first Marvel Collector Corps box was waiting on my step! Look for an unboxing post in the near future. Spoiler alert: I LOVED IT. Saturday was Free Comic Book day! I'm really happy with the 3 freebies I ended up grabbing. Gronk: A Monster's Story/Hero Cats of Stellar City, Step Aside, Pops/Super Mutant Magic Academy and Comics Festival. From there I went to my friend's annual Derby Day party. I decked myself out in fantasy theme with a fascinator with tiny dragons, a unicorn & a Pegasus on it as well as my crazy Unicorn dress. Some of us ended up pooling some money and actually bidding on the main race - which knocks another item off my 30x30 list!

Hearts of the Month: January 2015

A monthly round-up of things I loved.

ART: Fathers, Be Good to Your Daughters. Hint: It's an awesome piece of Guardians of the Galaxy art by Dan Hipp!

SPORTS: Lotus Pose on Two. I'm not big on American Football, and I didn't closely watch the Superbowl on Sunday, but if I was to pick a favourite football team it would be the Seattle Seahawks so I was rooting for them this weekend. It's all because of this article I read a while back. So cool!

ARTICLE: The Keeper of Frivolous Memories. I. LOVE. THIS. This article really speaks to me.

Wish I Was Wearing Wednesday: Mercury

If you know me at all you know how much I love dressing up, so it's no surprise that as I waited out the 2 1/2 hour process of getting my hair bleached and blued, my mind wandered to the glorious options now open to me for COSPLAYING.

I have a love/hate relationship with wigs. I LOVE them most of the time, but wearing them at conventions, especially in the summer, makes my head itchy and hot and makes me generally irritated.

I thought of how much my Ramona Flowers costume a few years back would have looked with my new hair.

Then I thought SAILOR MERCURY! I have recently started re-watching the Sailor Moon anime from the beginning and a few months ago I picked up my first Sailor Moon manga so the Sailor Scouts were fresh in my mind.

I like this little Disneybound-style outfit so much I may actually try to put it together for myself as a casual convention option for the future!

Wish I Was Wearing Wednesday- Superhero Soiree: Deadpool

The theme for my annual costume-mandatory birthday party this year is Superheroes.

It's safe to say I am VERY EXCITED.

There were so many amazing heroes that I considered dressing up as. I won't divulge yet who I ended up choosing but I can say that Deadpool was my runner-up.

Brown Paper Baggin' It: Pull List in Review

A year ago, over on my old blog I wrote a post outlining all the series I was currently reading, stopped reading and was thinking of dropping. I thought it may be fun (well for me at least hah!) to look back and see what has changed or not one year later.

Of the 8 series I was subscribed to then, I am only subscribed to Avenging Spider-Man and Deadpool. Amazing Spider-Man and BPRD Hell on Earth: The Long Death have since ended and I dropped Batwoman, Journey into Mystery (after Kieron Gillan's Kid Loki story was over), Wolverine & the X-Men & Wonder Woman. I also stopped buying both Animal Man and Swamp Thing on my phone.

Last February I was considering subscribing to 9 other titles and of those right now I am only subscribed to Adventure Time.

Here's what my current pull lists consist of:

Subscribed titles:

  1. Adventure Time (BOOM! Studios)
  2. Avengers Assemble (Marvel Comics)
  3. Avenging Spider-Man (Marvel Comics)
  4. Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics)
  5. Deadpool (Marvel Comics)
  6. The Fearless Defenders (Marvel Comics)
  7. Hellboy in Hell (Dark Horse)
  8. Young Avengers (Marvel Comics)
  9. Deadpool Killustrated (mini-series) (Marvel Comics)
  10. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake (mini-series) (BOOM! Studios)

I also read the comic Saga (Image Comics) digitally on my iPad mini. Not only am I completely LOVING the series, I am loving using my iPad to read it. I can see switching many of my titles over to the digital format. The "guided view" way the comic apps take you panel by panel through the story is perfect for me, who has many times lost out on the surprise moments when my eyes skipped ahead across the page before they were supposed to.

Hearts of the Month: January 2013

VIDEO: Ghost in the Stalls

I laugh like the first time I watched this, every time I watch this.

VIDEO: Iron Man Arc Reactor Proposal

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

ART: Portraits of People Who Look Alike But Aren’t Related At All

This project is so intriguing to me! Some people are offput by the awkward poses of two people who don't know each other but I think that makes me love it even more.

 VIDEO: Team Long Brothers

I CRY. This is one of the most beautiful videos I have ever seen. What an amazing brother/human being. These parents are clearly doing something right.

COMPANY: Royal Caribbean International

I think it says something that the day I came home from my very first cruise I was googling job opportunities with the ship.

I have feelings about The Avengers

I planned on doing a "Quick & Dirty review" of the Avengers. I had also planned on there being at least SOMETHING I could nitpick. This turned out to be not the case. I've seen it twice now (and I'll be going again tonight) and I cannot find a single thing I disliked about it. In fact, the film has instantly jumped into my favourite films of all time, behind only Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

So instead of doing a "review" that's simply me gushing over how amazing it is, I bring you the top 5 things- no matter how unlikely- I want to see in the sequel (I'll try to keep this spoiler free, but it may be safer to not read on until you've seen the film).

  1. Joss Whedon to return as writer/director. This man knows how to do an ensemble story. No character seemed like they were pushed into the background. They all had their moments to shine and the battle choreography & cinematography was some of the best (if not the best) I have ever seen.
  2. Spider-Man. How I wish Marvel Studios had the rights to the character! (On another note, HOW EXCITED AM I ABOUT THE NEW SPIDER-MAN MOVIE?! Hint: very)
  3. Spider-Woman & Ms. Marvel. Two of my favourite Marvel heroes, and the cast is in dire need of more bad ass women.
  4. Redemption for Loki. I have some speculations about his character that I am saving for a future, mega spoilery blog post.
  5. THE VISION. I will go more in depth into this in the above mentioned post!
